Championing the environmental champions

Date: 13/6/2011

Over the last 16 months, Recolight has established over 700 new waste lamp collection points.  Many of these have only been possible because of the remarkable commitment and belief of individuals.  The UK really is blessed with great environmental champions – people who will put their time and effort into making a difference.

The buzzword ‘champion’ is often overused, but for the people that have worked within our partner organisations to see the establishment of lamp recycling facilities, it is a very appropriate term.

Those champions have seized on an idea and put it into practice.  The unique Bulbstore containers we have developed provide the opportunity for retailers and local authorities to offer a valuable service within their communities.  But it was the champions within those organisations that made it happen.

And the champions are not just in our partner organisations.  We’re also working with dozens of environmental champions who are ordinary members of the public.   Through our partnership with CoBRA, these volunteers are real recycling heroes.  They collect waste lamps for their local communities, and take them for recycling in their spare time.

I cannot talk about recycling champions without giving a special mention to Mark Hatwood.  Through the CoBRA initiative which he founded, Mark has been tireless in his commitment to lamp and battery recycling.

Perhaps the moral of the story is that it only takes one person to realise the potential of an idea to make some great things happen.
