You always know the countdown to Christmas has begun when you see the first Christmas card envelope hidden between the bills and the morning paper. An unbelievable 744 million cards are sent in the UK alone so there is lots of post-
Christmas recycling to be done!
Many supermarkets and shops (like Tesco and WHSmiths) have bins where you can take old cards to be recycled, or get creative and use the front of last year’s cards as gift tags for this years’ presents!
Cards are not the only form of paper that we use over Christmas, and with lots of presents comes lots of wrapping paper – 83 sq. kilometres to be precise, enough to cover an area larger than Reading and Portsmouth put together! Of course, I’m not suggesting that you should ruin the surprise by not wrapping up your lovingly gifts but try using your recycling imagination to save on cost and paper.
Look through magazines for colourful pictures to make your own wrapping paper. You could even make a different wrapping paper for each person with pictures of their favourite things. And nicely decorated brown wrapping paper adds a bit of a rustic touch.
Only a week to go!
