Mad Mascot Dash

Date: 15/9/2011

On Sunday, I had a lot of fun competing in the AFC Wimbledon Community 'Fur & Feather' Mascot Race on Wimbledon Common, which I thought would be a fun way to raise awareness about the importance of recycling!  The event helps the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Rangers raise funds for the charity Hounds for Heroes, which provides specially trained assistance dogs to injured and disabled men and women of the UK armed forces and civilian emergency services.

I faced some fierce competition from the likes of AFC Wimbledon's Haydon the Womble, Horsham FC's Howie the Hornet, Sutton United's Jenny Giraffe, local favourite Debra the Zebra from Merton's Road- Safety Team, world famous Pudsey Bear representing BBC's Children in Need, Dr Dudley flying in from the Surrey Air Ambulance, Jimmy Spices' Mr Spice, Dazzler the Dragon, Medway's rugby-playing dragon, and Bumper and Squeak, two mice from the Hollywood Bowl in Tolworth.

We even featured on the Your Local Guardian website, with a great picture of all of us gearing up for the race!

Here I am with my new friend Pudsey!

Despite the stiff competition, my hopes were high –here I am standing next to the trophy donated by the Womble Underground Press (WUP). We had to run over the common, leap over straw bales and sprint for the finish line in the hope of lifting the WUP Cup.

After two gruelling laps filled with various obstacles, it was Debra the Zebra who finally overtook Pudsey on the final straight and went on to win the race!

I had an amazing time, despite the fact that it had rained for about three hours before the race and the ground was wet and muddy! So I didn’t win … but never mind, it’s the taking part that counts! Anything to help spread the light bulb recycling message!
